Muncie, IN Experience a remarkable art form that combines color, texture and stitch with Minnetrista's newest exhibition, Quilt Art 20. Thanks to the extraordinary skills of the artists featured, the 20th anniversary of this collection celebrates what is now at the forefront of contemporary textile art. The exhibition will open on June 12, 2010.
Karen Vincent, Director of Collections for Minnetrista, said this will be the 14th major quilt exhibit that Minnetrista has hosted. The first, Great American Quilt Festival: Memories of Childhood from the Museum of American Folk Art, premiered in August 1989, about 10 months after Minnetrista opened. The shows have varied from very traditional to very contemporary and from great celebrations (Women of Taste: A Collaboration Celebrating Quilt Artists and Chefs, 2001) to a memorial of a national tragedy (Sewing Comfort Out of Grief: The Oklahoma City Children's Memorial Quilts, 1998).
"Most of the quilt shows have been traveling exhibits, but several have featured quilts from the Minnetrista Heritage Collection," Vincent said. "In addition to major quilt exhibits, Minnetrista hosted the Muncie Quilters Guild Show for a number of years."
The art of quilting goes back generations. It is a skill that has been passed from mother to daughter and family to family. The threads of a quilt can bind one time in history to another. Those who quilt do so with an unrivaled passion. That passion has turned quilting into the contemporary art form that it is today.
Quilt art uses traditional quilting to create art objects. These works of art are most commonly designed to be hung on a wall, much like photographs or paintings. Though there are exceptions.
However, the quilt did struggle to become an accepted art form. But through integrity of expression and quality craftsmanship, Quilt Art has succeeded in extending the boundaries of this age-old medium. Quilt Art 20 will introduce some of the best examples of international contemporary quilt art for everyone to enjoy. The exhibition will be on display through August 29, 2010.
